The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that “meditation is a mind and body practice that has a long history of use for increasing calmness and physical relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness, and enhancing overall health and well-being.”
Meditation opens the door to mindfulness. As a practicing registered nurse for over 40 years, I have found this to be one of the best ways for people to help themselves and improve their lives.
Through practice, focus becomes enhanced, success at practice increases, and awareness grows. These qualities spill over into all aspects of life. Some reported benefits of meditation/mindfulness practice are improved health, less judgement, increased concentration and productivity, creativity, and increased inner stability and sense of peace.
I offer a monthly meditation class for employees at True Health New Mexico. I introduce a subject and lead a guided meditation to accompany it. Our community offers many other classes, seminars, private sessions. Working with a meditation teacher is an excellent way to receive support and guidance.
I encourage everyone to start a daily meditation/mindfulness practice to build the skills of resilience, gratitude, reflection versus reaction, and peace. There are many meditation/mindfulness practices besides a formal sitting practice: yoga, t’ai chi, dance, art, walking … choose one or more that speak to you.
